Abstract

One of the most formidable complications of benign prostatic hyperplasia in men of advanced age is acute urinary retention. The treatment approach in these patients entirely depends on the likelihood of restoring self-urination. The main treatment measure used to resolve the acute urinary retention is bladder catheterization — a quick and effective way to evacuate urine. The work of recent years has shown that the use of alpha-1-adrenergic blockers can increase the likelihood of restoring natural urination in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia with a newly diagnosed acute urinary retention. The data obtained by us on the high effectiveness of combination therapy with alpha-1-adrenergic blockers and drainage of the lower urinary tract for the purpose of conservative arrest of the newly diagnosed acute urinary retention allow us to recommend this therapeutic approach to a wide application.
